Firdous’ path to the Women’s Health Cover Search wasn’t paved with perfect macros or rigid gym schedules. Instead, it began in the quiet, stifling pressure of a corporate career, where the demands of endless deadlines pushed her to the brink of burnout. It was in the gym that she found her exit ramp – and her true calling.

What started as a desperate outlet for stress quickly transformed into a revelation. Strength training “helped me show up as a better worker and a better version of myself,” says Firdous.
It was a discovery she couldn’t keep to herself. She pivoted, leaving the corporate world behind to become a coach, determined to help other women experience the life-changing power of movement. That became Fit Circle, a women’s strength training community in Cape Town. “What started as a small group of women working out together grew into a community of women celebrating each other, pushing one another to become better versions of themselves, so that they can show up stronger in every role they carry,” she says.

Here, Firdous shares her wellness wisdom.
What has been the biggest challenge in your wellness journey, and how did you overcome that?
My biggest challenge has definitely been staying consistent. Since I started training, eating well, getting enough sleep, recovering properly, and moving more throughout the day has not always been easy. I often found that there were other things pulling me in different directions. Over time, I reached a point where it became a lifestyle choice rather than something I had to keep forcing myself to do.
How do you make time – and the budget – to prioritise staying healthy?
I try my best. Life happens, which means we don’t always get to prioritise the things we want to. A philosophy I have adopted over the years is that it doesn’t have to be complicated. Going for a walk is free, especially after spending seven or eight hours sitting at a desk in front of a screen. I have been there. If you can find small pockets of time to prioritise your health, you will eventually make progress.
What are your three principles for long-term wellness?
- Start small. If your goal is to eat healthier or become more active, you do not have to change your entire life overnight. Start with small, manageable changes and build from there.
- Don’t overthink it. We spend so much time talking ourselves out of doing the things we know are good for us. There will always be dishes to wash, emails to answer or something else demanding your attention. Sometimes you just have to put yourself first and do the workout. More often than not, you’ll be glad that you did.
- If today doesn’t go to plan, start again tomorrow. Life happens. There will be days when you miss a workout or make choices you are not proud of. That does not mean you have failed. Give yourself grace and try again the next day. Every day is a new opportunity to take care of yourself.
