If there’s anything Jeanelle has learnt in her 27 years, it’s this oft-overlooked fact: you don’t need natural talent to achieve extraordinary things. “I was never the naturally sporty person. Everything I’ve achieved has come from consistently showing up, and choosing not to give up when things felt difficult,” she says.
All About Jeanelle
Personal Trainer
One-word fitness philosophy: Holistic – mind, body and spirit
Post-workout reward: Sauna
Go-to recovery method: Sleeping
Growing up in the fishing town of Velddrif with big dreams, Jeanelle’s carefully laid plans took unexpected turns: a gap year; studies in linguistics and English; four years as an au pair. By the time she discovered how well personal training fit her personality, every other journey felt like necessary preparation. It came with surprising benefits, like finally addressing the debilitating acne that would keep her housebound.
Her hard-won wisdom now fuels her coaching principles. “I want to make my clients feel confident and strong, so when they leave me they can walk away knowing how to take care of their bodies like I did.”

What should every reader know about staying healthy?
Being healthy isn’t a straight line. It’s trial and error and not about being perfect every single day. The healthiest people aren’t the ones who never struggle; they’re the ones who keep trying every day.
How does food influence your life?
My philosophy is centred on eating food as God made it. For me, the best foods come from nature. I follow an organic, wholefood approach, filled with fruit, vegetables and quality protein.
How do you forge discipline and consistency when you feel discouraged?
Make consistent micro tasks – so small you can’t say no to it. Do one set, read one page and go on a 10-minute walk.
Why does it feel good to be you?
There was a time I felt lost. But I found myself through health and fitness. Taking ownership of my health was the best decision I’ve made yet. That’s because no one can take it away from me – it’s not built overnight. At the end of the day, the proof is in the pudding!
